Multi-hyphenate Dexter Story is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter, music producer, music director and freelance go-to music guy. Named after the jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon by his audiophile father, Story grew up on a steady diet of music theory, guitar and piano which eventually led to him fronting and touring in local Los Angeles bands by age 14. While earning his undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley and Bordeaux’s National Conservatory of Music in France, Story performed with a diverse array of masters including Wynton Marsalis, Ravi Coltrane, Ernie Watts, John Stubblefield, Slide Hampton, Jeff Narell and Eric Reed. Alongside a successful on-stage music career, Story also worked in every facet of the music industry business (from marketing director at Priority, Def Jam and Bad Boy Records to talent buyer at the legendary LA club Temple Bar) enjoying 15 years at the epicenter of popular music culture. His latest and most notable endeavors are this Summer’s stellar “Young Gifted & Nina” tribute at Grand Performances to the late great Nina Simone a year after directing the highly-acclaimed “Peace Go With You, Gil” tribute concert in the Summer of 2012. Story collaborates regularly with producer/DJ Carlos Niño as co-founder of the breakthrough experimental group The Life Force Trio as well as with acclaimed jazz/vocalist Dwight Trible, international producer Mark de Clive-Lowe and Todd Simon’s Ethio Cali Ensemble. Dexter Story has toured and recorded with Sa-Ra, Quadron, Madlib’s Yesterday’s New Quintet, Sam Barsh, Steve Spacek, The Long Lost (Daedelus’ and Laura Darling’s duet), Build An Ark, Rumer Willis, Nick Rosen among others. Most notably, he just released his debut album “Seasons” in February 2013 on Kindred Spirits which features a who’s-who of underground and international talent. Story also produced a World Stage benefit concert and tribute to Kenny Burrell at the Ford Theatre in August 2013 and is readying the release of his East African grooves record “Wondem” on Plug Research.
